GE Gas Range Repair No Spark
I had a bit of a stumper the other day with a GE Stove top repair. The Port St. Lucie customer called complaining that her GE gas stove top was not sparking on any of the burners. Typically when none of the burners are sparking this is caused by a broken ignition module so I went right to it and replaced it. This did not solve the issue. When I was under the hood of the oven i noticed that the gas orifice holder for the front right burner was broken. I replaced the orifice holder. When replacing the gas stove ignition module did not solve the no spark issue it caused me to study the wiring diagram. It was at this point that i noticed that the wires were originally hooked up to the ignition module in the wrong positions. The L line and N line were in reverse positions and the spark electrodes were also not hooked up to the ignition module in the proper order. I asked the client if someone else had worked on the stove before me, and she said that no one had. I know that the wires were hooked up wrong because I took a photograph of the ignition module with the wire set up before i installed the new one. I make a habit of taking photographs of wires before I detach them from any device. I put the wires in the correct positions according to the wiring diagram I found attached to the back of the GE stove. I thought this would fix the issue, but still, no sparks on any of the burners. I then checked the voltage from the wall and followed it up to every harness connection until I got to the harness for the burner switches. It was at the harness coming from the burner switches to the ignition module that I got the first reading less than 110 volts. I replaced the harness and burner switches, that come in a daisy chain, and this solved the no spark.
GE stove top no spark issue fixed.
It was very strange to see the broken orifice holder and the fowl wiring into the ignition module. It seems as though someone had been inside, trying to repair this GE stove before me. The client swore that no one had tried to fix the stove or oven before me.
Another issue with this repair was with what GE calls the “Economic Nut”. The Economic Nut is a GE OEM aluminium nut that matches up to the threads on the aluminium orifice holder. This nut is anything but “economic”. The single nut cost $9 plus $9.99 shipping and it is only available from GE or one of their distributors. They make the threads such that no other nut will match up to the orifice holder. This caused a delay in the repair. The original nut stripped when removing it from the broken orifice holder.
All said and done the customer was very happy to have her GE stove top working again.
I was glad for the extra visit to her home, and became her friend. We have stayed in touch since the repair and I plan on visiting her in her new assisted living facility.
